Ireland

Along the Wild Atlantic Way there are plenty of interesting historic sights to discover, such as Dungaire Castle near Kinvarra. Starting from Galway, the first leg takes you south through County Clare to the picturesque village of Ballyvaughan. The following day you are cycling into the unique karst (limestone) landscape of the Burren to Doolin, renowned for traditional Irish music, for a two night stopover. The loop route from here takes you around the Burren coastline and more importantly to the Cliffs of Moher. You then catch the ferry over to Inishmore, largest of the three Aran Islands for a night. You depart the island by another ferry which lands you at Rossaveal on the shores of Galway Bay, from where you ride west through Connemara to Clifden, often labelled the capital of Connemara, for your last 2 nights.

Itinerary

Arrival in Galway

Depending on arrival time, our partner will meet you with your rental bicycle. Galway is a bustling university town and with 67,000 inhabitants the fourth biggest city in Ireland. The city centre dates back to the middle ages and it is not difficult to find a pub.

Galway – Ballyvaughan

The route takes you away from the city along the coast to Oranmore and you leave the busier roads behind as soon as you reach Kilcolgan. From there it is on quiet backroads past the ruins of Kilcolgin Castle. Kinvarra is a beautiful fishing village ideally located for a nice seafood lunch. Continue your journey further south into the area commonly known as The Burren. Finish the day in the colourful village of Ballyvaughan.

Ballyvaughan – Doolin

A most beautiful day that will bring you into the Burren National Reserve, your first glimpse of this very unusual and unique region. You are passing by the Burren Perfumery, Ireland’s only perfumery, with its informational visitor centre, entertaining you on the unusual botany of the region. Stop in the small hamlet of Carron for lunch before continuing on minor backroads to Lisdoonvarna (along the route detour to the Polunabrone Dolmen adds 4km) and finish the day in the colourful village of Doolin.

Restday in Doolin or loop rides

If you have not done it the previous day cycle (or walk) to the Cliffs of Moher. There is also a beautiful cycle along the coastroad to Fanore with its sandy beach favoured by surfers. From here, turn inland onto the unique Burren landscape to cycle back to Doolin on minor back-roads.

Ferry ride to the Aran island of Inishmore

Cycle to the pier to take the ferry on your own to the island of Inishmore (the biggest of the 3 Aran Islands). The island is very rich in historic and pre-historic sites and highlights include the cliff top fort of Dun Anghus, the semi-circular fort (there are 3 semi-circular walls) is over 3,000 years old and holds a special place in Irish mythology. Less known is the Black Fort (Dun Duchathair) where you can experience some of the most beautiful cliffs on the island. Furthermore there are early Christian (starting with the 6th century) churches, monasteries and cemeteries. The island is famous for the knitwear that bears the Aran name. Spend the night on the island to get a feel for island life.

Inishmore (Rossaveal) – Clifden

After a morning spent exploring the island further and perhaps visit the fantastically located Black Fort (a promontory fort with 3 sides falling steeply into the sea and the 4th side protected by a massive wall. There will also be time to visit the shops at the harbour offering traditional Aran sweaters, before you take the ferry back to Rossaveal at noon. You will be heading into Connemara along the coast and over sections of bog-roads to the market town of Clifden. Here you will stay for two nights.

Clifden along the coast (several options)

You have the possibility to visit the island of Inishboffin. The ferry leaves from Cleggan. But if you prefer to remain in the mainland then there is a beautiful loop ride past beautiful beaches to the fishing village of Roundstone, where you can see traditional musical instruments (bodhrans) being made by hand. There is also a wonderful a ride out along the Sky Road to enjoy some sublime coastal scenery and views over the Atlantic and the islands.

All around your family hotel Friedrichshof

If you and your family enjoy riding on two wheels, then you will discover a cycling region in the Trubach Valley and Franconian Switzerland with idyllic circular routes or challenging routes past lofty rock towers, wide plateaus and extensive forests. Despite the hilly landscape, there are cycling tours suitable for families with children.

Big and little heroes on a grand tour

Challenges are better than boredom: When planning a tour, consider balancing the optimal amount of challenge between too little and too much. If the stages are chosen too flat or too short, you and your children will lack challenge and the opportunity to prove themselves. But the tours should not be too strenuous either, so that cycling is not perceived as an imposition.

The Sendlhofer’s TOP 5 BINKING ROUTES

Rastoetzen is surrounded by many peaks. One of them is the Gamskarkogel, the highest ‘grass’ mountain in Europe (2467m). This tour can ideally be combined with a hike to the Gamskarkogel. Duration: approx. 1,5h. After a comfortable snack break in one of the alpine huts, you return to Bad Hofgastein.

The Tour
The Rastötzenalm is a challenging route for mountain bikers made up of lots of steep serpentines and only very few flat parts. The steep paths already start in town. From the Wasserfallgasse to the bridge and across the pond – the next steep path up to cafe Sonnberg already awaits. Here you go left to the Annencafe. Next, you go up to the three alpine huts through a pine forest.

Terrain: 905m in altitude

Highest Point: 1.741 m

Distance: 17,15 km

Duration: approx. 2,5h

Difficulty: Medium

Starting Point: Bad Hofgastein Town Centre

On the way up to the alpine huts above the Breitenberg part of Bad Hofgastein, you have a beautiful view of the southern part of the Gasteiner valley. Both alpine huts spoil you with homemade delicacies – from beer to ‘Krapfen’.

The Tour
The Tour starts in the town centre of Bad Hofgastein and leads north, via a part of the Gasteiner bike trail up to the train station Bad Hofgastein. Before you reach the train station, you turn left, cross an underpass and start the climb up through Breitenberg. You can enjoy a spectacular view from there. At the Brandebengut, 1151m high, the trail continues on a forest path. Now you go through a forest where the path is made up of a mix of gravel and tarred streets. Just before you reach the tree line, you get to decide to take the path to either Biberalm or Wiedneralm. From there it’s only a short path to the goal.

Terrain: 1.013 m in altitude

Highest Point: 1731m

Distance: 26,16 km

Duration: approx. 2,5h

Difficulty; Medium

Starting Point: Bad Hofgastein Town Centre

On the sunny plateau of the Gadauner mountains, you can find many mountain huts. Enjoy the homemade delicacies while enjoying the spectacular view in a cosy setting.

The Tour
The starting point is the town centre of Bad Hofgastein. You follow the signs up to the Angertal. This is where the gravel path, leading past the ski centre Angertal, starts. You pass the barrier by the Waldgasthof and take a relatively flat path into the Angertal until you cross the Angertalbach (pond). After the bridge you take the right hand path up. Now you go mainly through forests. After the steepest part, there’s a pond with natural drinking water waiting for you. From there it’s only a few more serpentines until you reach the part above the forest line where the Gadaunerer mountain huts are located. The number of small huts makes this place look like a little village.

Terrain: 1058m in altitude

Highest Point: 1.834 m

Distance: 29,53m

Duration: approx. 2,5h

Difficulty: Medium

Starting Point: Bad Hofgastein Town Centre

This very popular tour leads through the heart of the nationalpark Hohe Tauern. At the foot of the Ankogel, the forest path leads through the side valley. You should take the opportunity to take a break in the Himmelwandhütte or the Alpenhaus Prossau along the way. The ‘strudels’ at the Himmelwandhütte are delicious. At the Alpenhaus Prossau you can enjoy traditional Austrian dishes in the garden while looking at the waterfall.

The Tour
Prossau is located at the end of the Kötschachtal in Bad Gastein. The tour starts at the tourism point in Bad Gastein and leads south across the Karl Heinrich Waggerl street. At the first crossing you go left towards Kötschachtal and follow the Kötschachtaler street. Once you arrive in the valley, you pass the ‘Grüne Baum’ and the ‘Malerwinkel’ and cycle along the Kotschach. First you reach the Himmelwandhütte, which invites you to take a break. After this, you pass the mythical ‘Himmelwand’, before you make your way up to the Alpenhaus Prossau.

The tour to the Amoser Hochalm leads you to a beautiful area above the Unterberg, which is a northern part of Dorfgastein. The tour starts at the community park in Dorfgastein. You follow the signs to Unterberg. The steep path starts at the Amosergut and shortly after, the tarred street stops. Soon you are able to enjoy beautiful views of the Gasteiner valley. At the Amoseralm (1200m high), which is also a restaurant, you can find a place to rest. Experienced bikers can continue on this path, which becomes more and more difficult. When you reach the goal, you get rewarded for all the difficulties. The Amoser Hochalm, which does not offer food or drink, is located at the foot of the Bernkogel, which is especially famous for its steep rock formations.
