Hiking holidays Irelands Western Way
Ireland: land of contrasts! Rough and spectacular at some points, idyllic and peaceful in other places. The Cliffs of Moher mark the beginnig of your week along the green coast of Ireland. The walk along the coastline is one oft he most spectacular trails in the world. Then things get more peaceful on the Aran Islands. The setting sun brings a dreamy atmosphere to this small village in the bay of Galway. From here you continue on the Great Western Way where you experience Ireland at its best. Boggy landscapes, green hills and the Fjord of Killary Harbour as final destination of your hiking week in Ireland.
Itinerary
Individual arrival in Doolin
Cliffs of Moher
The cliffs of Moher tower more than 120 metres over the west coast of Ireland. This coastal line makes the setting for your first hiking day. After a short transfer you will start your hike close to Liscannor. Your walk leads along the Cliffs of Moher Trail that leads along the coastline back to Doolin.
Aran Islands
Transfer to the harbour and with the Ferry to Inis Mor, the biggest oft he Aran Islands. Countless stone walls were built on this island to harvest the poor soil. Your walk leads past a seal colony to the ruins of Dún Aenghus (UNESCO world heritage site). When you arrive at the site the tourist busses have left already and you can take a close look at this spectacular fortress. Then you make your way back to Cill Rónáin.
Aran Islands
The Aran Islands are known as the home of the Gaelic language and music. If you are interested in traditions, a lot can be discovered on this island. If you would rather enjoy the fresh air, rent a bike or put on your walking boots once again to discover the many other monuments and fortifications on the island.
Oughterard – Maam’s Cross
You rise early to catcht the first ferry back to the mainland. A transfer brings you from Ross a’ Mhil to the starting point of your hike at Lough Boffin. You follow a trail through a colourful forest that ends on the shores of Lough Corrib. At the end of the lake a landscape typical for Connemara awaits you. Swamps, green hills and sparkling rivers make for an idyllic ending of this lake. At the end of the trail you will be picked up and be brought to Tiernakill valleyour accommodation.
Maam’s Cross – Lough Inagh
Short transfer back to the valley of Tiernakill. Today you walk towards the Maumturk Mountains. The way up to Maum Ean pass shows Connemara at its best. Endless green hills, myriads of sheep and a wonderful views are waiting today. Hundreds of years ago St. Patrik walked this trail as well and blessed the hills of Connemara from the top of Maum Eans pass. Today a small chapel, a celtic cemetery and a statue of St. Patrik mark this sacred site. From here you descend to the valley and walk towards the 12 Bens and Lough Inagh.
Lough Inagh – Leenane
Trees are scarce in Ireland but today you walk through several forests. The landscape is varied. You leave the hills of Maumturk mountains and the 12 bens behind and walk through boggy forests towards Killary Harbour. At the end of Connemaras only Fjord Leenane is waiting for you. This idyllic coastal village is the ending point of todays hike.
Departure or extension
Tour character

Short, but really nice!
From the Jagdschloss Resort there is a nice asphalted road to the Finstertal reservoir (approx. 300 meters of altitude difference have to be overcome). The view at the different places, where benches invite to stay, compensate for the ascent. Past the Graf Ferdinand Haus, the starting point for the toboggan runs in winter, but they are closed in summer. Caution is only advised with the short tunnel, as it is very dark, but fortunately there is hardly any movement there. After about 35 minutes you reach the reservoir and are rewarded with a great view. At the moment there is just a revision, so there is hardly any water in the reservoir.
From there, many beautiful hikes go, for example to the Neunerkogel (2640 m), to the Schartenkopf (2855 m), to the Schweinfurter Hütte (2034 m) or even to a three thousand meter peak, the Sulzkogel (3016 m). Another possibility would be to go to the Drei Seen Hütte, where you can also get refreshments during the day. Back home, you can enjoy the wonderful view of Kühtai and the surrounding area once again and then, after a sauna, look forward to dinner in the lounge of the Drei-Seenhaus.
Here is a brief information about the Finstertal Reservoir:
The Sellrain-Silz power plant group of Tiroler Wasserkraft AG is a plant located near Silz, west of Innsbruck, from the group of pumped storage power plants for the generation of peak load, which consists of the two storage lakes Finstertal and Längental and the power plants Kühtai and Silz. Water transported via streams into the Längental reservoir can be pumped into the higher-lying Finstertal reservoir at the Kühtai power plant, thereby gaining high-level energy which can be used again at peak demand times by first feeding water into the Längental reservoir and then through pipes laid in the rock massif with a height difference of over 1250 metres to the Silz power plant, where it drives turbines at high speed.

Salzkammergut-Tour
Even Emperor Franz and Empress Sissi knew how to appreciate the Salzkammergut and all its charms, as they regularly „holidayed“ at their summer residence in Bad Ischl. Follow in their footsteps – albeit on a bicycle – and immerse yourself in this very special world with glittering lakes, excellent cuisine, dreamlike panoramas and delightful villages.
Details of the 8-day cycling tour with Eurobike
Wolfgangsee, Mondsee, Attersee, Traunsee, Hallstätter See – you can’t get enough of cool water? Then you’ve definitely come to the right place, because one dreamy lake after another awaits you. Head from St. Gilgen to the Zwölferhorn or explore the former film set of Orth Castle in Gmunden.
On day 5, you will travel via Bad Aussee to the Ausseer Land region, where magnificent panoramas once again meet idyllic lakes. Have you always wanted traditional Austrian clothing? Then Bad Aussee is the place to be, because here you can find everything to do with historical clothing. Other gems of the region await you, e. g. Hallstatt and Bad Ischl, before you head back along the Ischler Ache river.
Highlights of the cycling tour through the Salzkammergut
- Magnificent panorama from the Schafberg at Lake Wolfgang: The easiest way to reach the summit is to take the Schafberg cable car. At 1,782 metres above sea level, magnificent views open up. Of course, you can hike up as well, but you should pace yourself for the next few days of the tour. The fabulous Toplitzsee appears black and opaque even in the best weather. But it captivates with its extraordinary beauty. Incidentally, it has its very own animal that lives at a depth of around 60 metres – a worm! A treasure of gold is also said to be at the bottom. The World Heritage Region of Hallstatt: The village, nestled tightly between lake and mountain, is probably one of the most extraordinary places in the world. There’s a reason why there’s a copy of Hallstatt – in China. The imperial town of Bad Ischl: Live like an emperor or empress here! Nibble on the delicacies of the local pastry shops, follow in Sissi’s footsteps in the spa gardens and enjoy the liveliness of the small imperial town.
Things to know about the tour
The tour features a fine mix of flat sections on the lakeshores with occasional climbs and hilly terrain between the lakes. Always allow time for a break to soak up the magnificent mountain panoramas.
